We’re All In This Together… We need only to look inside of ourselves to understand that the true law of ‘Oneness’ comes from understanding that we are tied to each other and the universe in ways beyond that of common law. With a deeper understanding of what ‘we are all one’ means we recognize a deep truth, that when ‘I help you, I help me… and equally, when I hurt you, I hurt me.’
Understanding the depth of connection through an awareness of Oneness, we do best by acting and speaking with connecting language of love and compassion. Caring for our brothers and sisters helps insure that we will not just survive, but live enriched lives by enriching the lives of others.
These ideals of mutuality, equality, and the ability to truly see each other may seem difficult to apply to our busy lives at times, and can even seem irrelevant in this age of digital inter-connectedness, but there has never been a time when our oneness and togetherness at a heart level has been so essential to the future of humanity. We have a responsibility to one another to realize that our actions affect everyone who exists and will exist on this planet.
As John Muir puts it, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”
It can’t be known how the world is affected when a hurting brother or sister is comforted in their time of need. We can’t fully understand the impact that empathy for those whose actions we don’t understand can have on the course of all of our futures. Yet, even though we don’t know which events our prayers and acts of goodwill will affect, we do know that there is a measurable impact and a tangible power that moves in our lives and the lives of others when we choose to act with intention.
It is for reasons like these that we must have compassion for every living thing, because without it, we risk losing touch with the essence of who we are as humans. We have been charged from birth to communicate, love, and collaborate with all life on this planet.
